I have a thing for old movies. The good ol’ black and white pictures of previous generations. Ah yes, take me back Gregory Peck. There is something so comforting about old films to me. I don’t really remember when I started to have this little obsession of the oldies. I do know I went through an Alfred Hitchcock phase as a pre-teen that wouldn’t die. If I see one of his films on, I must watch it. Remotes fly, dogs get stepped on (not really), drinks are poured and oh yeah, it’s happening! Oh Norman, let her go. And patch up those holes already, ya creeper! I revel in a good mystery/suspense film but love it ten times more if it’s black and white! I walk around wondering where I fit in this world of “flashy noise” often. Everything feels so raw and intense with most films that are centered in the present day. I suddenly see gray hair and several new wrinkles emerging. Get off my lawn (er, blog)! No, wait! Come back.
Truthfully, I’ve always longed for a simpler way of living. There’s a lot I don’t agree with from back then and the restrictions put on people due to race or gender, but I’m an old-fashioned girl at heart and appreciate all the civility that was customary “way back when”. I really appreciate watching a film with women dressed elegantly and chivalrous men in “shnazzy” suits pulling out chairs and waltzing around a ballroom. Everything so amorous and humble. Though, I guess Norman Bates wouldn’t fit into this category and I still enjoy his character. I wonder what it is about old films? More intrigue? Slower paced? More conversation and less noise? Unsolved mystery remains unsolved. And I’m okay with that. Time to go watch James Stewart stare out a window.
