Do you own any pets? Or do you merely admire them from afar and if lucky to be near a random furry friend, eagerly run up to, fondle, talk sweetly to and dream of owning one? I’ve had pets as long as I can remember. I have a cat who is quite old now, (17 or 18 as of late). She’s curious, independent, and yet, follows me everywhere. Don’t try to place her on your lap. Out of the question measly human! She used to sleep by my side each night, until my husband took her spot. She still likes him, (kind of). The Doctors say the scars should fade.
We also have two dogs who are very hyper and in dire need of serious training. I’ve always preferred dogs but have a partiality for a well-trained one! (In time). These two are comically bizarre, bark at anything outside with the resemblance to a tree, have head butt me in the face upon excitedly greeting me, leading to mild nose injuries and foul words bellowed. One of them moans every time he cuddles with you, the other growls if you stop caressing his head. Alas, I love those unruly creatures. They embody the energy I wish I had. Dogs don’t need a people break or recharge alone time. They offer a level of incessant warmth, perpetual loyalty, and overflowing enthusiasm that no human can replace. Where your messiest, most archaic clothes…they won’t mind. Now, sing loudly to your favorite song while wearing those messy, archaic clothes….they may tilt their heads in confusion or curiosity, but pretty definite they won’t view you any different.
I remember going through various phases of grief over the last several years and each memory includes one of my animals, noticing my emotion, my energy and offering comfort. Animals mystically sense things and just want to be near you. They lick your tears or lay by your side. They sense you’re not okay and stick with you, until you are. Snuggle buddies, furry friends, dogs, cats or whatever your favorite creature is, give your pet a special, scrumptious treat tonight and say “thanks”, (with your head tilted of course).
